You have me intrigued Scott, what's the "Obelisk" ???

Any idea of the cheapest method to get to Luxor from Hurghada?

Ha ha Obelisk is a red wine Lee, Omar Kayam is the other, then i think thats it really in the red wine stakes unless you can get some imported.

Tons of wines in Egypt now and some of them aren't half bad.
Check out:
http://www.alahrambeverages.com/
Enter the site and click the "Drinkies" tab - they're the best off licence store in Egypt and have a shop in Hurghada - even better you only need to call them and they deliver.
The Drinkies Tab will list all the wines and spirits they stock and prices.

This is only half the list though - as the other half of wine and beer is made by the other company whose name I've forgotten.

The wine called Ayam is really good, not tried the red version though but the white was exceptional.
At least it will give you some idea on prices.
Woo Hoo!!!!! I've got a signature!

Hi,
Christine beat me to it!!!

As for the ride over, there are quite a few buses; haven't tried them but they are cheap.

A private minivan will cost you about 500 LE but will run on your schedule.

Either way, it's about a 4.5 - 5 hour trip. Oh, yes, it gets tricky after 6PM - I htink they close the road to taxis so you must go on a scheduled bus which - at night - is a death-defying experience - best avoided!!!!

A couple of times per year we engage a van from Luxor for a day trip to Hurghada for a fish lunch and Western food shopping. That runs us about 550 LE for the round trip. I guess that would be what would happen - I can't see doing it one way - so figure 500 - 550 R/T.

Best,
Scott

Lee, we’ll both go to Luxor, split the cost of the van and Scotty can put us up ;) ;)

Believe me there will be no fight, after Eid and the amounts of cooking I've done, the kitchen is all yours. I'm done for at least 10 years

What about me!

Post by Claire » Thu Sep 24, 2009 3:48 pm

Sounds like you re planning a party without me!!! If it's a really good party I mite just have to plan a trip over to Egypt as well and I love Luxor!!! How many rooms have you got Scott cos I've got 3 kids!!! Don't worry only joking!
The cheapest way of getting around in Egypt is either bus or minibus, not private minibuses the public ones where everyone piles on and you pay the driver whatever he asks! All a bit random and variable. BUT be warned the scariest drivers ever are the minibus drivers!!! I have NEVER seen anything like it but still lived to tell the tale and go on them several times. But no joke I always pray before we set off and often along the route as well!!!!
We also hired a minibus from Hurghada to Cairo and that was a very pleasant trip. Air con and loads of room and travelling at our own pace and doing a little detor to the monastery. It only cost us 700 LE and the dirver was with us all day.

So, fit in around those breaks!!!

WE taxi to Hurghada about 2 -3 times per year for fish lunch and western food shopping. Sure we can hook up then - if you don't come here first!!

As for house sitting, we have a great guy who comes in for our trips to care for our beloved Karelian Bear Dog! Sorry, job taken! But you're still welcome!!!!!

Lee, if you are up for it we can go in my car to one of the Luxor Meetings where the Luxor4u gang get together for drinks etc. I went to Luxor in March and took some of the members of Redsea4u.

We could stay either one night or two or more...... SEPERATE ROOMS !!!!! The Redsea members took the opportunity of visiting the Tombs and Temples while they were there........I took the opportunity of meeting lots of old friends and trying to drag Keefy and Choccie to disco's
