Right i confess to looking up the Monotones and i think it was possibly 3 of thier group members Charles Patrick George Malone and Warren Davis.
Is this cheating as i had to do research?

Well done Christine
: even though you did cheat
seriously though, a bit of research is OK on a difficult question
its when people just Google everything without trying that it takes the fun out of the quiz.
So you are on the ball with those three guys who wrote the song 'Book of Love' and were part of the seven people who origionally made up the 'Monotones'
So the next question is:
Which song ties together the line:
"Oh and as I watched him on the stage, my hands were clasped in fists of rage"
with the only hit record by the Monotones?

That was exactly the connection I was looking for Lee, well done
:
It was of course the song by the monotones that was being refered to in the song 'American Pie'
And the words came from the song also.

I suppose I have to give that one to Lizk,
: well done.
I would have given you an extra bravo if you had also said the song was 'Stand and Deliver'

OK, in 1965, who said:
"I took my troubles down to Madame Rue
You know that gypsy with the gold-capped tooth"
