Obama promised his two little girls that when the campaign was over, they could have a dog. Now he has to make good on that promise. The question is, what kind of dog should they get?
One criteria is that one of his daughters is allergic so it has to be a dog that won't bother her.
What's your suggestion for the first dog?

It has to be a poodle , miniature, toy or standard, so there is a choice on sizes there and they don't moult, only in clumps now and again, so good for people with allergies. They are intelligent and respond to training quickly.

Watching a rep from the Westminister Kennel Club discussing the first dog right now. The golden doodle does look nice. Obama said (very pc) that their first preference is a shelter dog but might be hard to find one that passes the allergy test. But the Westminister rep just said any short haired or tight haired dog would do that. Poodle being at the top of the list HL.
I know my beagle has very short hair but still sheds. I think the key for them will be to groom the dog daily to remove shedding hair and wash it often. My little male dog, who nows lives with my daughter, has long hair. I got tired of leaves coming in the dog door stuck to his fur so had him clipped. He looked great and no more leaves everywhere.
On another note, current first dog Barney bit a CNN reporter the other day. That guy should have known the Bushs don't like reporters!

Hair is definitely a problem. We have usually had Goldens but presaently we have a Karelian Bear Dog - in all cases long hair. You just plan to reupholster the house in the color of the dog!!! Especially when they shed seasonally!!
Seriously, an allergist will tell you that it is not the hair but rather the dander (flaking dermis, or skin) that is the problem. No breed can stop that; in fact most house dust is really human dander - charming thought!!!

Very true. My other dog is a lab/bassett mix with that thick lab black fur. She sheds a lot. No matters how many times I vaccum, my carpet often looks as if it is growing a black winter coat. Waiting for Son in law # 2 to come now and take my vaccum apart - again - from the dog hair. I need one of those dog vaccums that sucks up the loose hair. That is if she would let me get close to her with it.
Bought one of those double leashes the other day and was excited to take the girls out for a walk at the same time. They were excited too when I opened the front door. But when I started moving away from the car and down the driveway, they both just stopped in their tracks. After a few minutes of trying to pull two unwilling dogs a step or two forward, I brought them back in so they could recover from the trauma on their cushy sofas.
