UK energy Costs

Post by Spike »

Just reading on Sky news about the UK's energy cost's, here is the article...

Energy bills in the UK have reached a record high, yet Sky News has learned that almost all of us remain clueless about how much our household appliances cost to run.

According to the charity National Energy Action, virtually every householder in the UK is unaware how much energy our appliances use.

This means that at a time when average energy bills are up £381 from the beginning of the year, we have no idea how to break down our household bills to save money.

The Gilbane family, from Bexleyheath in south-east London, is typical in this respect.

They agreed to allow Sky News to test the cost of running a variety of appliances in their home. The results were surprising.

Based on current habits, the cost of using the washing machine, tumble dryer, television, kettle, vacuum cleaner and hair straighteners, was more than three times the amount they'd estimated.

Factoring in the cost of running absolute essentials such as the refrigerator, the Gilbanes are paying out £2,356.12 for the appliances we tested alone.

Collette Gilbane had estimated the cost would be closer to £700.

How Much A Week?
:: Lighting 42 hours = £2.40
:: TV 35 hours = £2.79
:: Vacuuming 3 times = 24p
:: Hair straightener 21 uses = 30p
:: Washing machine 21 times = £2.00
:: Tumble dryer 21 times = £9.85
:: Kettle 35 times = 70p

Total = £27.03

"I was quite shocked really," she said. "You just take it for granted and switch things on. You don't really think about how much they're taking up, moneywise."

Another surprise for the Gilbanes was how much it cost them to run small appliances such as hair straighteners.

A year of personal grooming turned out to be more expensive than a year of vacuum cleaning.

Richard Archer, of National Energy Action, said the problem is often one of confusion.

"There is a lot of nonsense out there," he said, "a lot of old wives' tales. Most people think the kettle is the worst for energy consumption but it's not by a long way."
