   Not quite sure where the waxworks bit came in  but yes NG :) it is indeed Florence Nightingale, so well done :br:
The clues were:
1. Although British, she was born in Florence, Italy and her family were wealthy.
2. She was famously depicted holding her lamp (holding a candle)

ahhh I never thought I would win was a wild guess....sorry folks for delay in getting on I have had some difficulties with getting online.

Ok, who I am ?

I have never had money or a decent home and had to rely on kids to provide some for me. But deep down I am a good person and do what I can for them in return.

That is a hard one NG :) but I had a good think about it, could it be a character from Dickens, like 'Fagin'?

Sorry to take a while replying, I have been a bit busy :)

Like I said in my answer, I had a good think about it and the Fagin character seemed to fit the bill :)
Fagin was obviously poor as he lived in a run down dump of a place.
He sent the kids out on the streets to steal for him.
He took young Oliver off the streets and gave him a home.
He would cook them sausages for their dinner.
He tried to defend Oliver against Bill Sykes

So basically although he was a 'fence' and made his way by sending the boys out stealing, he did not ill treat the boys and acted more like a father figure to the orphan boys. :D
