[face=Comic Sans MS]I don't mind molokhia but what on earth is that greyish pinkish creaminsh coloured 'dip' that smells off and tastes even worse? I've tried to cast the taste of it out of my memory but if I dare to try to recall I would say it smells a bit like sweaty socks and tastes a bit like you'd imagine sweaty socks to taste like! The dish you're thinking of is the one and only evil aged fermented cheese dish popularly known as Mish.

Think they mix it with something to turn it into the dip, but I've never really explored wha, as I can't stand Mish and won't allow it in the flat!

Would it be mixed with 30 year old dried piclked fish? - I'm sure that must have been one if the 'secret' ingredients.

I'm fairly sure it wasn't Tahina, but could be wrong. [/face]

Fermented cheese would give you a very good approximation of sweaty socks, so it must be Mish, :) I have had that Tahina stuff and although I was not struck on it, I don’t recall that it had the rancid smell you describe.

[face=Comic Sans MS]It was very much a case of 'taste that smell'! I didn't notice the smell of it so much until I was tasting the actual dip. I'll have to watch out for Mish on my next visit and see if that's what it really was. [/face]

Mish

Post by Hurghadapat »

Didn't think that most restaurants that a tourist would use would be serving Mish more likely to be found in an Egyptian home. The most used ones in restaurants are Tahina or Baba Ganough but may be wrong. :ni:

[face=Comic Sans MS]I've not eaten in many restaurants in Luxor, 'tourist' or otherwise. This :?: dish was served to me in a local families home and, apart from the odd occasion when I've found things over spiced with chillie and lost the use of my taste buds, it's been the only food item I've not liked.[/face]

Post by Hurghadapat »

thought what you where talking about whas not tourist grub but have to get used to the hot and spicy stuff if you come to live in Egypt as chillis are a way of life out there. The heat of them either kills or cures everything. :x :x
