Right i confess to looking up the Monotones and i think it was possibly 3 of thier group members Charles Patrick George Malone and Warren Davis.
Is this cheating as i had to do research?

seriously though, a bit of research is OK on a difficult question ;) its when people just Google everything without trying that it takes the fun out of the quiz.
So you are on the ball with those three guys who wrote the song 'Book of Love' and were part of the seven people who origionally made up the 'Monotones'

So the next question is:

Which song ties together the line:

with the only hit record by the Monotones?

Well that line is from American Pie, which makes reference to "Who wrote the book of love"

That was exactly the connection I was looking for Lee, well done :br:
It was of course the song by the monotones that was being refered to in the song 'American Pie'
And the words came from the song also.
