The first snow fall of the season in Hitchin, Hertfordshire
Kaya Burgess
Unseasonably cold weather spread to the south of the country last night, with snow falling in the capital.
Football league matches in Luton, Northampton, Walsall and Wycombe were cancelled because of blizzards. There was heavy snowfall in parts of Scotland.
A Met Office forecaster said: “It’s not even winter yet. It’s unusual to get snow this early in the season.” No severe weather warnings were issued by the Met Office and no major roads were closed, although authorities had been on alert when snow fell during the rush-hour in Birmingham.
Despite thickening cloud today, snow is expected only on high ground in western parts of Britain. The east will be fine but cold, with rain over the next few days. The cold snap is likely to last to the end of this week.
