Most nursery rhymes were either based on fact, or were a way of mocking the establishment and some were just a way of teaching morality to young children.
For example: Humpty Dumpty was believed to be the name of a large cannon that was used to defend the city of Colchester in the English civil war. It was sat upon a wall at the nearby church, the rest of the story describes what happened to it. :)

My next book I'm going to write is a research into the history of rhymes alongside an artist friend of mine who is going to recreated the 'sugar and spice' pictures you usually see and turn them into what the rhyme was originally about.:)

Lisa, perhaps you should start with ‘Mary, Mary, quite contrary’ that should give you a gruesome start. :)

Last night we were discussing Beef Wellington (riveting stuff I know!) But it lead into me giving a stirring rendition of The Grand Old Duke of York and educating Mr G on the Napoleonic wars. (I just like the sound of my voice really and will lecture on any given topic given half a chance!)

I had a game that involved cards a bit like Trivia Puruit, where you would read the card, which would tell you all information like this and then you had to guess what the Rhyme was........but I can't think for the life of me what the game was called or what the hell happened to it.

Yes but it's the parents who buy the books. :( I bought my kids a lot of the Mother Goose books but don't think I would buy that one.
