Many times when I was in a taxi mainly in Sharm El Sheikh, when i gave the taxi a 50 LE note, they swap it around very fast for a 50 Piastere note.
They have never got away with it with me yet as I am very aware and vigilent of my cash!
Only one taxi has tried this in Hurghada, and the only issue now is with excessive charging.
Maybe this scam will be reduced now the coins are coming into circulation.
Has anybody been had by this scam? I would presume they make alot of money from unfamiliar tourists of the EGP.

I always try to have the correct money, but this did happen to me in the Isis Hotel in Aswan, the waiter by the pool did it, but he didn't get away with it, he thought he had a tourist that didn't know better, I had his manager down and reported it, course the manager defendend him I think they were probably in on the scam together but I got my 50le back
I'm not afraid of tomorrow cos I've seen yesterday

So it seems it's not just with the Taxi's then!
I always have change now, or if i don't i ask them to give me the change first then i give them the note.
They are very quick to argue when you pay them a fair fare including a tip then an overcharged fare.
It's really nice when a taxi driver charges you the right fee, then you end up giving them a tip to the amount what they would scam you with...if only they could realise customer service goes a longer way than ripping people off.

I had a caleche driver that tried this with me, he didn't get away with it. I had to laugh at his cheek. However, I had the same man a couple of days later and he did exactly the same again. I went ape at him, got ALL my money back and every time he saw me after he offered me free rides. Which I turned down.
I do wonder how many people do fall for the scam though!
