Are you legal?

We have now arrived at a point about 10 years on since the new type UK driving licences were first issued. I just thought that I would post a reminder to all you expats living elsewhere in the world, that if you hold a UK driving licence with photograph, then remember that it MUST be renewed after 10 years, otherwise you could face a £1000 fine. Most people I know are unaware of this legal requirement and just assume that once they have their full UK driving licence that it lasts them forever so to speak. You must return the actual paper licence document, photo card licence, plus your fee of £17.50 (cheques & P.Os.only) together with an up to date passport type photograph that must be 45mm x 35mm attached to the space on the form D798. Your photograph does not require countersigning but must be within the above photo size, the actual head part must be at least 29mm to 34mm in length (top of head to underside of chin) the background should be plain. You will also need to sign the form in the space provided. This form is meant to be processed by machine, therefore these requirements need to be submitted on the above form and sent to the DVLA Swansea.
The form itself is quite straightforward and only requires a few boxes to be ticked, plus your signature and new photograph. However if your address has changed then you must inform them of this, as you must also do if your health has changed in any way that may be detrimental to you driving. While your licence is away for renewal you may continue to drive (in UK) providing you have not been banned or have any other reason that forbids you from driving.
