Egypt to close airports when pandemic alert level reaches Phase 6

CAIRO, April 30 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian Health Minster Hatem al-Gabali announced that the Egyptian authorities would close the airports and crossings if the World Health Organization (WHO) declared its pandemic alert level to Phase 6, Almasry Alyoum daily reported Thursday.

"Up till now there aren't swine flu suspected cases in Egypt," Hasasn Mohamd, director of Cairo airport quarantine told Xinhua.

"We check every passenger comes from Mexico, not just the Mexicans. We take their contact details, names, addresses, to follow their health conditions," he added.

The WHO on Wednesday raised the pandemic alert level to Phase 5, indicating that a full pandemic is imminent.

The Egyptian government decided on Wednesday to slaughter all pigs in the country immediately in an attempt to avoid the outbreak of the fatal flu that has hit different parts of the world.

The WHO's pandemic alert system includes altogether six phases. Phase 6 is the highest level which means a full global pandemic is under way.

My God did anyone see the news when the Egyptian guy picked up the live baby piglet and threw it 30 feet from the truck to the ground?

Why are Egyptians SO cruel to animals?

Personally I hate rumors but this came from the Associated Press wire about 1 hour ago:

The World Health Organization earlier announced that a pandemic was imminent, but it has decided against declaring a full pandemic alert. Still, that doesn't mean people can relax, said Dr. Mike Ryan, WHO's global alert and response director.

Dare we hope???

WHO's position, as of last week, was that they are constantly assessing the situation and may well go to Level 6. However, they have been continuously cautioning governments to NOT over react - who knows what Egypt's reaction will be - after all, look at the pig slaughter - being totally unnecessary.

Also, WHO has said that they plane to describe the severity of the flu as Moderate, in a range of Mild to Severe.

So, who knows, what the WHO will do and, more to the point, what Egypt willdo. Hopefully they will have the sense to not overreact. We shall see.
Best to all,
Scott

We are all anxiously awaiting news. God willing, they will only continue to do the testing they have been doing so far, but who knows.

Maybe watch the luxor4u forum - lots more postings on the subject there.

Best to all,
